Curaçao is one of those islands where the reef often begins just a few strokes from shore. No excursion or scuba tank required: a good pair of fins, a mask and water shoes are enough to explore some of the best the island has to offer. Five spots, all accessible from the beach.
Tugboat Beach, the legendary wreck
At Caracasbaai, the wreck of a tugboat rests about five meters down, just a few dozen meters from shore. Covered in coral and surrounded by fish, it can be visited with a bit of light free-diving, making it one of the most accessible wreck sites in the Caribbean.
Playa Piskado, the fishermen's turtles
On the west coast, near Westpunt, sea turtles regularly show up at this small beach where fishermen clean their catch. Watch them by swimming calmly and keeping your distance: don't touch them and don't feed them.
Playa Lagun, the narrow cove
Wedged between two cliffs, Playa Lagun is one of the most sheltered coves on the island. Fish gather along the rocky walls on either side of the bay, in water that's usually very calm - ideal for a first snorkeling trip with kids.
Cas Abao, with extra comfort
A large stretch of light sand with loungers, showers and a bar, Cas Abao also has a beautiful reef that starts close to shore. It's the spot that best combines a classic beach day with snorkeling.
Daaibooi, the quiet one
Less crowded than its neighbors, Daaibooi offers good snorkeling along the rocks framing the bay. Free to enter and popular with local families, it's perfect on weekdays, when the bay is nearly empty.
One last tip: the sea stays calmer in the morning, before the wind picks up. And wherever you go, don't touch the coral or the marine life - Curaçao's reef is best explored with your hands behind your back.
