Playa Kalki sits at the very end of the coastal road through Westpunt, the northernmost village on Curaçao. You reach it via a concrete staircase that descends from the parking area, just below Kura Hulanda Lodge. The beach itself is small, lined with white limestone rocks, kalki in Papiamentu, which gives the spot its name.
What really sets this place apart is what happens beneath the surface. The reef bordering the beach, nicknamed Alice in Wonderland by divers, is known for its mushroom-shaped coral formations, which look almost otherworldly. The reef begins just a few meters from shore, making it a prime spot for both scuba diving and snorkeling in Curaçao. Turtles, moray eels, stingrays and schools of colorful fish are all regular sightings along the coral slope.
A dive center is set up right on the beach, so you can rent gear or suit up on the spot before swimming out to the reef. It's one of the few places on the island where you can go from a morning dive to a nap in the sun without ever leaving your patch of sand.
What makes Playa Kalki memorable is the contrast between the simplicity of the place on the surface, a quiet little cove at the bottom of a staircase, and the richness of the world unfolding just below it, as if the island had hidden its most beautiful garden underwater.
You'll need a car
Most of the best beaches are at least 45 minutes from Willemstad. Renting a car is not optional.
