The Aloe Vera Farm Curaçao

In eastern Curaçao, in Groot Sint Joris, the CurAloe plantation stretches out in fields of aloe vera. A guided tour takes you through the rows of aloe before showing you behind the scenes at the small factory where the leaves become gels and cosmetics. A simple, informative stop, ideal to combine with a walk around nearby Sint Joris bay.

In Groot Sint Joris, in the east of the island, the CurAloe plantation grows rows of aloe vera as far as the eye can see. This is where Curaloe products are born, the gels and cosmetics you later find in shops and pharmacies across Curaçao. The guided tour starts with a walk through the fields, where the guide explains how the Barbadensis Miller plant is grown and harvested, before heading into the factory to follow the process from cut leaf to bottle.

The site sits just steps from Sint Joris bay, a still fairly quiet corner of the island, far from the bustle of Willemstad. That's actually what makes the place enjoyable: you come as much for the plant as for the setting, dry and windswept, typical of the Curaçaoan kunuku.

At the end of the tour, you inevitably pass through the shop, where the gels, lotions and other products made on site are sold, along with an aloe vera drink and a slice of banana cake to enjoy on the spot. A short visit, but one that gives you another sense of what the island really grows, between sea and desert.

Fort Beekenburg

At the entrance to Caracasbaai, an early 18th-century fort still watches over the bay. Fort Beekenburg, built in 1703, stands out from a distance thanks to its round tower shaped like a chess piece, one of the best-preserved historic forts in the Caribbean. Access is free, the climb to the top of the tower offers a view over the Spanish Water, and the surroundings hold a few surprises for those who take the time to linger.

Colorful Stairs

In Otrobanda, just off Breedestraat, an ordinary neighborhood staircase has turned into a vibrant canvas of colorful geometric patterns. This free photo spot, now emblematic of Willemstad's street art revival, draws locals out for a stroll as well as visitors eager to capture the moment. Pair it with a wander through the surrounding streets, among murals and restored facades, to soak up the full artistic spirit of the neighborhood.

Klein Curaçao

Off the southeastern tip of Curaçao floats an islet nobody lives on, reachable only by boat trip. Klein Curaçao lines up a white-sand beach as far as the eye can see, crystal-clear water where sea turtles cruise, and two silhouettes that tell another story: an abandoned lighthouse and shipwrecks stranded on the windward side. A full day, without signal or distraction, for those looking for a true deserted Caribbean island.
