Coming from the parking lot, it only takes a few steps to discover one of the most photographed views in Curaçao: a crescent-shaped bay, framed by low cliffs, where the water shifts from turquoise to deep blue depending on the light. It's this view from the lookout point, just before the descent to the sand, that has made Grote Knip the most beautiful beach in Curaçao in the eyes of many regulars and visitors.
On weekends, the atmosphere shifts. Local families arrive with coolers, music, and sometimes a game of dominoes in the shade of the trees, a real glimpse into Curaçao's beach culture. On weekdays, especially early in the morning, the bay becomes much quieter, with the water almost to yourself.
On the north side, a small cliff attracts those who enjoy jumping into the clear water, a local ritual best practiced with caution since the bottom isn't very deep there. Access to the beach itself is free, but it's worth bringing some cash: umbrellas and chairs are rented out on some days from small stands, along with a few snacks and cold drinks. The facilities remain deliberately simple, in keeping with a beach that is still largely unspoiled.
What strikes you most is the contrast between the white sand, the green of the surrounding hills, and that blue so intense it inevitably ends up in every vacation photo taken in Curaçao.
You'll need a car
Most of the best beaches are at least 45 minutes from Willemstad. Renting a car is not optional.
