In Banda Abou, on Curaçao's west coast, the Blue Room Curaçao slips quietly between the cliffs near Boka Santa Cruz. Nothing gives it away from the surface: just a narrow crack in the rock, barely visible, that you need to swim through underwater over a short stretch. It's on the other side that everything changes. Daylight, filtered through this submerged entrance, bounces off the sandy floor and floods the cave with an electric blue that wraps around swimmers and makes the schools of fish sheltering in the shadows shimmer.
There are two ways to get there: by swimming from Santa Cruz beach, which takes a good fifteen minutes in the water, or via a coastal trail followed by a short swim, for those who prefer a walk before diving in. Boat trips departing from the same beach remain the most comfortable option, with equipment provided and a guide on site.
Snorkeling at Santa Cruz around the cave also holds its own surprises: schools of silvery fish, coral covering the walls, and sometimes a lobster tucked into a crevice. A mask and snorkel are essential to fully appreciate the play of light beneath the surface, the most spectacular part of the experience.
One thing worth remembering: it's around midday, when the sun is at its highest, that the blue becomes most intense, a meeting with the light that's best not missed too early in the morning.
