Curaçao with kids: the safe bets

Calm beaches, ostriches, figurines to paint, and a shipwreck to snorkel: Curaçao turns out to be surprisingly well suited to family holidays. Here's a rundown of the activities that actually work with kids.

Curaçao has a reputation as an island for divers and couples chasing secluded coves. What gets overlooked is that it also ticks every box for a family holiday: sheltered beaches, short distances, and a real lineup of activities designed with kids in mind.

Animals at kid height

At Curaçao Ostrich Farm, one of the largest ostrich farms outside Africa, the guided tour brings kids up close to these giant birds. On the west coast, Playa Piskado offers a quieter but just as memorable experience: sea turtles you can watch while swimming calmly nearby, without touching or feeding them. And at Curaçao Sea Aquarium, you get to see reef wildlife in pools fed directly by the sea.

Making things with their own hands

At Serena's Art Factory, near the ostrich farm, kids paint their own Chichi, the island's iconic figurine representing the family's big sister. Everyone leaves with their own creation, a souvenir that lasts a lot longer than a fridge magnet. In town, the Children's Museum Curaçao rounds out the lineup with its interactive exhibits.

Exploring without the effort

The Hato Caves are visited on a guided tour, in the cool underground air, with stalactites and petroglyphs on the program - kids love it. On the sea side, Tugboat Beach is the family spot par excellence: a tugboat wreck rests just a few meters deep, visible while snorkeling right from the shore.

Beaches that forgive everything

For swimming days, head to the sheltered coves on the west side: Playa Lagun, narrow and calm, or Daaibooi with its shady palapas. Grote Knip, more popular, is still very manageable early in the morning.

And on Thursday evenings, if there's still energy left: Punda Vibes brings downtown Willemstad to life with music and fireworks over the bay - a good way to end the day wide-eyed.
