Arriving on the road to Westpunt, the entrance to Hofi Mango is easy to spot, in the heart of Banda Abou between the villages of Soto and Lagun. What strikes you first is the shade: a mango grove several centuries old, the remnant of a plantation founded in 1707, where mangoes and sugar cane for local rum distilling were once grown.
The marked walking trail winds through palm gardens, a cactus garden and the mango forest before passing the old sugar mill, the only one of its kind still visible in the region. The more energetic continue up the staircase nicknamed the Stairway to Heaven, which climbs to the Hand of God sculpture, where the view opens onto the hills of Bandabou and, on a clear day, Christoffelberg.
One detail few visitors anticipate: the full walk, at an easy pace, takes well over an hour, and the final climb calls for good shoes. Down below, the estate's restaurant serves local cuisine in the shade of the trees, the perfect way to end the visit with a mango juice or cocktail.
